How to create a date hierarchy
By following the guide below, you can build date hierarchies in Report Builder. You have the flexibility to create hierarchies like "Year - Quarter - Month - Week - Day" or customize combinations according to your needs. Additionally, you can easily toggle subtotals on and off and apply date filters for precise data analysis.
Creating a universal report
Let’s start with creating a simple report using Universal Report template available in the reports gallery.
Once the report is created and saved, we may configure it with Jira data fields. Let's expand Set data and make some changes to our auto-generated template to create our first Timesheet. To do so, we keep “Project“ field in “Rows“, and replace everything in “Columns“ with “Worklog Author“. Let’s also clear the “Measures“ section, and add “Sum of logged time there“.
Now we could work on our dates hierarchy.
Selecting and Formatting Your Date Field
All you need to do is select the date field you need (for instance, "Worklog Started") and add it to your Pivot table. Now let's format it as "years" using a set of predefined formatters available in Universal Report.
Adding and Formatting for Multiple Levels
Now we can add the same field one more time, but let's format it as months this time. This creates a multi-level hierarchy that can provide insights at different granularities.
Viewing Your Hierarchical Structure
You see, we now have a hierarchical structure of "Year" – "Month" for the worklogs created in the corresponding periods. You could extend that hierarchy simply by adding the same field and formatting it in the way you need again.
Customizing Your Report View
We could also rename these fields, and move all these fields into the "Columns" section and disable the calculation of totals if we do not need to see totals by the upper element of the hierarchy (for instance, year). This customization allows you to tailor the report to your specific needs. Let’s start with renaming the fields.
