Sprint Velocity report – User guide

The Sprint Velocity report helps you compare how much work your team commits to a sprint and how much it actually completes.

Open the Sprint Velocity report

  1. In Jira, open Report Builder.

  2. Click Create report.

  3. From the list of templates, select Sprint velocity.

You’ll see:

  • The Configure panel on the left.

  • The Sprint Velocity chart in the center.

  • The Report data table at the bottom.

Configure the report

Use the Configure panel on the left.

Select project to display

  • Select project to display
Choose the Jira project whose sprints you want to analyze
    (e.g. Report Builder (RB)).

Only sprints from this project will be used.

What to calculate

  • What to calculate?
Select the metric for the velocity, for example:

    • Issue count – compares how many issues were committed vs completed.

Tip: Pick the same metric you use for sprint planning (issues, story points, etc.).

Choose which sprints to show

  • Last closed sprints to display
Enter how many of the most recent closed sprints you want to see
    (e.g. 5).

Optional checkboxes:

  • Show all closed sprints – ignore the number above and show every closed sprint.

  • Show all active sprints – also include sprints that are currently in progress.

  • Show all future sprints – include planned sprints.

Use these to switch between a short recent history and a full backlog of sprints.

Additional display options

  • Show completed average

    • Adds a black line showing the average completed value across all visible sprints.

  • Show trending line

    • Adds a blue line showing the trend of completed work over time.

  • Show result table

    • Shows/hides the Report data table under the chart (Sprint / Committed / Completed).

  • Show sources table

    • Shows/hides the technical sources table with details about the underlying data.

The chart updates automatically when you change any option.

  • Measure impact of process changes

    • Blue trend line going up or down after changes.

  • Use historical completed values for future sprint planning.
